A Kodama is a spirit that lives in the trees; a fairy, nymph or dryad.
The concept of the cones was formed from the notion of the Kodama, a Japanese nature spirit that dwells in trees and forests.
I wanted to create my own versions of the Kodama. Little memories, imprints of places I've lived or been.
Spirits or ghosts are just memories imprinted in the places they dwell. These are mine which rest on the corner of my sight, never coming fully into focus, always fleeting, but never leaving. The shape of the cones is based on the witches hat., an object of magic and power, a link to the heavens and nature.
The cones are ceramic, made from a slip cast and are hollow inside. Some have a hole in the top to allow sound to be projected outwards via a small speaker and mp3 player placed inside. Each image was hand drawn and transferred onto the glazed surface using a decal transfer.
